In some cases, steps are pretty much unavoidable. Bell towers and lighthouses might be good examples.
But in places like this where there is more than enough room to construct an inclined slope instead steps are pretty much unforgivable. These particular steps on the chanelside walk by the college do not even have wheelchair access never mind scooter access. Any disabled person encountering these steps is forced to turn around and make a quarter mile detour for the sake of progressing a further 10 yards to the college. Disabled college students are likewise obliged to make the quarter mile round trip if they wish to go sit on the chanelside walk during breaks. The truth of the matter is of course that to all intents and purposes this area is out of bounds to ALL disabled people.
