Colin says: These cottages on Piel Island were originally built to house the customs officers who worked on Piel in the days when there could be up to 250 ships in Piel's anchorage at a time.
DL says: They may have been used by Customs officers, but were orginally built to house the pilots who brought the vessels into Barrow Docks after they opened in the 1860s
