DL says: These buildings were commissioned in 1911 as part of the Walney coastal battery, the site having already been used since the 1880's. The large concrete structures in front of them (and one at the far south end of the island) were modified from their original use as gun locations to accommodate searchlights as part of the WWII air defences. Only the derelict tower now remains, and was last used up to 2002 as the base for HM Coastguard, Walney island
