DL says: The ponds in the southern bird santuary are the result of gravel and sand extraction over many years. Salt was extracted through wells and was dissolved in hot water pumped into the wells for the purpose. The main area of activity was south of Biggar Village and at Hillock Whins. Salt was exported via the south end pier and there were some industrial buildings there. Salt was never extracted by mining on Walney.
