Colin says: Furness Abbey benefits greatly from a high degree of environmental maintenance and has earned a Visitability Rating of 7/10.
Scooter access to the entire site is only limited by the very nature of the structures which are being preserved. There is one particular grassy embankment which is sufficiently steep enough to cause minor concern, but if approached at right engles with sufficient bravado even that is well within the capabilities of reasonably robust class 2 machine. Several other small areas of the site are not fully accessible at close quarters due to such things as historic drainage ditches and the remains of the foundations of the site's various out-buildings, but all things considered, it is hard to see how full access could be granted without completely ruining the nature of the site.
The visitors centre (which must be negotiated in order to access the grounds) is well stocked with shelves of memorabilia which could benefit from being laid out with scooter access in mind. But on the plus side - the staff are extremely helpful and polite and informed me that a make-over of the access ramp is in the offing anyway.
Summary: Expect to scoot off in an odd direction now and then in order to get where you want to go - and do suggest to the staff that scooter access routes should be signposted for the benefit of disabled visitors.
