DL says: Walney Lightouse was built in 1796 from sandstone brought from Overton, across Morecambe Bay. It was built not for Barrow, but by the Port of Lancaster Commissioners to protect shipping bringing goods and the odd slave from the West Indies into that port. It is one of the few lighthouses in England not operated by Trinity House, and was one of the last to be automated, having been done only within the last couple of years. It was, of course, for many years the home of Peggy Braithwaite, the only female lighthouse keeper in the UK.
