Colin says: Jubilee Bridge

Jubilee Bridge (near the top of the photo) spans Walney Channel, a working navigation route at the time it was built. The bridge is still raised on occasion to allow the odd commercial vessel and pleasure boats to pass along the Channel; most noticably during the bi-annual Round Walney yacht races.

Until 1935 Jubilee Bridge had been had been a privately owned toll bridge known simply as Walney Bridge. It had been opened on July 30th 1908, but in 1935 was officially renamed Jubilee Bridge and re-opened by the Queen Mother free of toll.

The last Walney Channel ferry, build by Vickers Maxim, and operated by the Furness Railway, continued to run until the bridge was opened.

Looking West from Barrow in Furness over towards Walney from high above Devonshire Dock - the large building top-right is BAE's submarine facility.
