For the same reason that you should never put your trailer fully into the water you should never ever take your vehicle right down to the trailer. There are often people just loafing around without apparent reason at launch and recovery sites - and while they might well be to shy to offer - most of them would just love to help manhandle your boat and trailer up the ramp to your vehicle.
