A public-events calendar for Walney Island and the surrounding area is now available.
The calendar may be viewed by anyone and allows logged-in Friends of Walney Calendar Account holders to add entries announcing any public event in the geographical area immediately surrounding Barrow In Furness. If you make an entry in the calendar please be sure to include all relevant information about the event you are announcing. Information such as it's start and end times, the location of the event, a point of contact, and cost of admission, (etc.) is all highly relevant to those who might like to attend.
All event notices are archived for historical purposes; and the event calendar itself can be accessed via the Public Events Calendar link in the main menu or from the [CALENEDAR] link which appears at the bottom of every page on the site.
A valid e-mail address is all that's required in order to register. That e-mail address will never be made public, and will never be used for anything other than Friends of Walney account administration purposes.
Click here to register for a Friends of Walney Calendar Account.
Providing you are already logged in when you view the calendar you will see an "Edit" link associated with every day of every month. Ordinary web site visitors do not see this link. To add an event simply click the appropriate "Edit" link and type your information into the popup text box that follows - then click the box's "Add This Entry" button. Your brand new announcement will be appended to any other announcements which already exist for the same day and will immediately become accessible to all who view the calendar. Note however that you would have to refresh the calendar page before the link to your new entry becomes visible. Click the "Refresh" button of your browser to do this, or press Ctrl R, or simply click "next month" then "prev month" links instead.
Note: Radio Free Walney now offers a constantly changing daily playlist of 10 Podcaster Tracks tracks via the public event calendar. Click the calendar's "Play List" link to access it or see Friends of Walney > Radio Presenters Accounts for more info.
Q. Who is eligible to make entries in the calendar?
A. Anyone who has an interest in publicising as many events as possible within a (10-15 miles radius of Barrow in Furness) and who is willing to properly research the events in question and provide full and complete information which includes a point of contact for those who would like more information. If you want to scour the local newspapers for interesting events that's fine by me... but if all you want to do is announce one or two events in which you have a particular interest I'd much rather you just e-mailed me the info and let me do it for you.
1 Calendar Account making 100 entries = Good
100 Calendar Acounts making 1 each = Not Good
For those who do post events to the calendar; it is vital that you realise that the public-events calendar may be viewed by anyone, and therefore make entries for any adults-only entertainment in such a way that the parents of small children aren't likely to take offence should their children see it. Should offence ever be caused you can guarantee that I'd rather err on the side of caution and suspend the account (or even cancel it outright), should apologies and assurances of future seflt-moderation not be imediately forthcoming. If in doubt - ask before you post - and I'll gladly assess your announcement and let you know whether or not it would have my support.
Q. How much information should I include?
A. The event's start and end times; the venue, the price of admission (even if it's free - still mention it), and a point of contact where more information can be had - are all highly relevant to those who might have to travel some distance in order to attend. It might also be useful if you could supply info regarding the accessibility of the venue (for the benefit of wheelchair users and the like) for those of us who've never been to that venue before.
Q. How long are the notices available for?
A. All notices are currently archived for historical purposes. This may well change as time goes by but there are no plans to ever delete a notice at this time.
Q. How do I make an announcement?
1. When you arrive at the site click the [FRIENDS of WALNEY] link in the right-hand-side column and log in to your account. Once logged-in you can either close the popup login window or leave it open (so you can easily log back out later), and switch back to the main browser window.
2. Providing you are already logged in when you go to the calendar you will see "edit" links associated with every day of every month. This is strictly for you - regular web site visitors do not see this link.
3. To add an event simply click the appropriate "edit" link and type your information into the popup text box that follows - then click the box's "Add This Entry" button. Your brand new announcement will be appended to any other announcements which already exist for the same day and will immediately become accessible to all who view the calendar. Note however that because the entry was made in a seperate browser window you would have to refresh the calendar page before the link to your entry becomes visible. Click your browser's "Refresh" button to do this, or simply press Control-R (i.e. press the "Ctrl" and "R" keys at the same time).
Q. Do I need to log in and out every time I make an entry?
A. That's entirely up to you. There's no requirement that you should ever log out so far as the web site's concerned. If you don't log out you'll find that next time you go to the calendar the edit link is already visible. And for some that's quite convenient, especially if they make lots of announcements one at a time. But on the down-side; if someone were to post an offensive announcement from your computer as a result of you not logging out you'd still be expected to accept responsibility for it. My advice would be that if there's only you and the dog - leave it logged in. Whereas if you regularly throw lots of wild parties and/or habitually play practical jokes on your pals it's probably best to do the smart thing and get used to logging out. ;)
Q. Are there any restrictions on calendar postings?
A. Yes. The posting of any material which in the webmasters opinion promotes; religious beliefs, agressive or anti-social behaviour, or any form of sexual persuit or activity, is specifically prohibited and highly likely to result in the account in question being terminated without further notice.
If you have any problems using your Friends of Walney calendar account please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Colin.
